What is story in Tableau?

A story is a sequence of sheets and dashboards arranged to make a point in order, each step being a story point with its own caption.

Each story point remembers the state it was captured in — filter selections, sort order, highlighted marks — so you can walk an audience through an argument without setting anything up live.

It suits presenting a finding rather than exploring one: here is the trend, here is where it breaks down, here is the segment responsible, here is what we should do.

Stories publish to Server and remain navigable there, which distinguishes them from the Pages shelf, whose control does not survive publishing.
